About me
I’m a Penn State student who builds websites for a living.
I’m Nicholas Cabel, and I build websites for a living. By hand, one project at a time, from West Chester, Pennsylvania.
MakeAndUpdate is a studio of one. When you hire me, you work with the person who designs the layout, writes the code, and ships the site. No account managers, no handoffs, no “let me check with the team.”
I work in WordPress and Shopify when they’re the right tool, and I hand-code in HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript when a site needs to be lighter and faster than a page builder allows. Sub-second load times are a floor here, not a tagline.
I’m also a Penn State student, which is how THON became part of this. THON is the university’s student-run philanthropy for families fighting childhood cancer. Ten percent of all project revenue goes to it — every project, current and future. When a local business hires me to build their website, part of that work helps a family at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital.
When I’m not building, I’m usually testing something, tearing apart a slow page, or getting a hot cocoa around Wayne or King of Prussia.

Why there’s a Penn State pledge on a web design site.
THON is Penn State’s student-run philanthropy. It supports families fighting childhood cancer through Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital, and it is best known for a 46-hour dance marathon run entirely by students.
I’m a Penn State student. Fundraising for THON is something I would be doing anyway. Putting my studio behind it means the fundraising does not depend on how much time I have between classes. It depends on the work.
So ten percent of all project revenue goes to THON. Every project, current and future. It comes out of my revenue, not your budget, and your project is scoped and quoted exactly as it would be either way.
