What is an email list?

An email list is the group of people who gave you permission to email them directly, usually through a website form, a checkout, a QR code, or an event sign-in. Unlike social followers, nobody can take a list away from you.

In plain English

Your Instagram followers are not yours; your email list is. An algorithm controls who sees your posts and can change the rules overnight. Nobody controls your email list but you.

Three moves

01

Start collecting on day one

A list built slowly from the start beats scrambling to build one later.

02

Give people a reason to join

A useful offer gets far more sign-ups than a bare "subscribe" button.

03

Actually email them

A list that never hears from you is a list that forgets who you are.

Worth remembering

Email returns 36 dollars for every dollar spent, while organic social reach averages just 3.5%.

That gap is the whole argument for owning a list instead of renting an audience. A platform you do not control can shrink your reach overnight; your own list cannot be taken from you.

What to do about it

If you are not collecting emails yet, you are relying entirely on channels you do not own. Get a free website audit and I will show you where a sign-up should live on your site.
