State College
In town now
Who it’s for
- Downtown State College restaurants, bars, salons, and shops that live and die by walk-in traffic.
- Centre County businesses in Bellefonte, Boalsburg, Lemont, Pine Grove Mills, and Port Matilda.
- Owners whose site falls over on a game weekend, or never shows up when someone searches from a phone on College Ave.
- Anyone tired of paying a monthly fee for a template they do not own.
$880 or less
The launch bundle — a ready-to-go website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, and on-page SEO — is $880 or less when it runs on accounts you own, so your domain and profiles stay in your name with no reseller markup. Bigger or custom builds are scoped and quoted to you, fixed, before any work begins.

What you get
Built for phone traffic
Most searches here happen on a phone, on the move. Every page is hand-coded to load in under a second on cell data, not just on campus wifi.
Holds up on a busy weekend
Static, hand-coded pages do not buckle when a home game multiplies your traffic overnight. No plugin stack to fall over.
Local search foundations
On-page SEO plus Google Business Profile and Yelp set up properly, so you turn up for "near me" searches across Centre County.
Edit it yourself
Change a price, swap a seasonal menu, or post game-day hours in seconds from a simple dashboard. No developer, no waiting.
A town with two economies, and a website has to serve both
State College runs on two clocks at once. There is the student economy — tens of thousands of people who arrive in August, vanish in May, and find everything through a phone and a search bar. And there is the year-round economy of Centre County residents, university staff, and the surrounding boroughs, who are still here in July when College Avenue goes quiet.
Most local websites are built for one and quietly fail the other. A student searching “late night food State College” at 11pm and a family in Boalsburg looking for a contractor want completely different things from the same five pages. The fix is not more pages — it is a clear structure, honest local SEO, and a site fast enough that neither person gives up waiting.
Game weekends are a load test
On a home football weekend the town’s population multiplies, and a large share of those visitors have never been to your business before. They are searching from a phone, often on stretched cell service, and they are deciding between you and whoever loads first.
This is exactly where a bloated site loses money. A page builder stacking a dozen plugins and a megabyte of JavaScript will crawl on congested mobile data. Hand-coded pages stay fast because there is nothing extra to load — which is the whole reason I build them that way.
Working here, and honestly about it
I am not going to pretend to be a State College institution. MakeAndUpdate is based in West Chester, PA, and most of my past builds are in the southeast of the state — Kabab Cafe, a Persian restaurant and market, and Maxima Hair, a salon.
What is true is that I am in State College now, so meeting in person is easy while I am here, and the work itself has always been remote-friendly: you talk to the person writing the code, wherever either of us happens to be. If you want to see the work before you decide, it is all on the site.

Common questions
Are you actually based in State College?
MakeAndUpdate is based in West Chester, PA, and I am working from State College at the moment. That means in-person meetings are easy while I am in town, and everything after that runs the way it always has: direct email and calls with the person building your site. Nothing about the work depends on being in the same room.
Can we meet in person?
While I am in town, yes — anywhere around State College, Bellefonte, or the rest of Centre County. Plenty of clients prefer to run the whole project over email either way. You are talking to the builder, not a sales rep, in both cases.
How much does a website cost in State College?
The launch bundle — a ready-to-go website plus Google Business Profile, Yelp, and on-page SEO — is $880 or less when it runs on accounts you own. Larger or fully custom builds are scoped and priced to you, with a fixed quote before any work begins. No surprises, no meter running.
Why does “accounts you own” matter?
Because it is the difference between renting your business online and owning it. Your domain, your Google Business Profile, your Yelp listing, and your hosting all stay in your name. Nothing is held on my account, there is no reseller markup, and if you ever want to take the site to someone else, you just do it.
Will my site handle a home game weekend?
That is one of the reasons I hand-code. There is no plugin stack or heavy page builder to slow things down, so pages stay fast on congested mobile data when the town fills up. If your current site struggles on game weekends, send me the link and I will tell you exactly what is slowing it down.
Can you set up my Google Business Profile and Yelp?
Yes, both — set up from scratch or cleaned up if they already exist. Correct categories, hours, service areas, photos, and the details that decide whether you appear in the local map results for “near me” searches around Centre County.
I have a site already. Is it worth rebuilding?
Sometimes it is not, and I will tell you so. Plenty of projects start as a rescue — speed and security fixes, better local SEO, a cleaner structure — rather than a rebuild. Send the link and you will get an honest answer, not a sales pitch.
How fast can it launch?
Expect a first working version within about 24 hours, and most small-business sites go live in 2–3 days once content and feedback come together. Bigger builds take longer, and you get a concrete schedule with milestones before anything starts.
