What is an AI Overview?

By Nicholas Cabel The 60-second version lives on Instagram

An AI Overview is the box Google shows at the top of results that answers your question directly, instead of just linking to pages. It is not a search result; it is an AI-written answer, and it can either quote your site or skip it entirely. Two things decide which: how clearly your page answers the question, and whether Google trusts it enough to cite.

In plain English

It is like asking a knowledgeable friend a question instead of being handed a stack of pamphlets. The friend gives you the answer right away, and mentions where they read it, if they mention anyone at all. Your job is to be the source worth mentioning.

Three things make a page quotable

01

Answer first

State the direct answer plainly near the top of the page.

02

Clear headings

Organize the page so an AI can find the exact section that answers the question.

03

Facts an AI can lift

Write specific, accurate sentences that can be quoted word for word.

Worth remembering

Ahrefs found the number-one result loses 34.5% of its clicks when an AI Overview appears.

That is a third of your traffic gone even from the top spot, just because an AI answered the question before anyone clicked through. Being the quoted source is now as important as ranking first.

What to do about it

Rewrite your key pages so the answer appears early, in plain sentences an AI can quote directly. Want to know if your site is set up for this? Get a free website audit.
