Journal · The Clarity Series
20 website questions, answered in 60 seconds each.
Every answer below is the written version of a 60-second video from my Clarity Series on Instagram — plain English, no jargon, and one number worth remembering, sourced from real research.
Getting found — search & AI.
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization: making your page the answer that shows up when someone searches. Three things move it — answer the questions people actually search, keep the site fast and easy for Google to read, and earn links from solid sites that vouch for you.
The number: About 90% of all clicks land on page one of Google. Page two might as well not exist.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization: getting AI assistants to read your page as the answer. Clear answers, clean structure, and trust are what move it.
The number: Nearly 60% of searches now end with no click — the answer gets read on the results page.
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization: getting AI to build its answer from your content, and cite you. Citations, clarity, and freshness are the levers.
The number: Hundreds of millions of people ask AI tools questions every single week.
What is E-E-A-T?
Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trust — Google's checklist for whether your site is worth trusting. Show real experience, get cited, stay accurate.
The number: Trust overrides everything: untrustworthy pages score low no matter how expert they look.
What is CTR?
Click-Through Rate: clicks divided by views. Out of everyone who saw your result or ad, how many actually clicked? It tells you if your message lands, where to spend, and what to fix first.
The number: The #1 result on Google takes nearly 28% of all clicks — almost three in ten, before anyone scrolls.
Is "build it and they will come" real?
No — it's the most expensive myth in web design. A new site is a shop on an empty street until you give people ways to find it: target real searches, get listed on Google Business and directories, and point links and content back to it.
The number: 96.55% of pages get zero traffic from Google.
Why am I invisible on Google?
Facebook, Instagram, and a Maps pin aren't a home Google trusts — you don't own any of them. A real website you own is what Google can rank and customers can trust.
The number: 81% of people look a business up online before they visit.
Will AI replace websites?
No. AI assistants don't invent answers — they read pages and quote them, yours included. Answer real questions in plain text, put the answer near the top, and be specific with prices, hours, and facts.
The number: Barely 1% of people click through to check an AI answer — if your page isn't the source, you're invisible.
Turning visitors into customers.
What is CRO?
Conversion Rate Optimization: turning the visitors you already have into customers — same traffic, more sales. Clarity, trust, and less friction are what move it.
The number: Around 70% of online shopping carts get abandoned. CRO wins some of them back.
What is a CTA?
Call To Action: the one button you want every visitor to click. Make it clear, lead with a verb, and make it pop — "Click here" is the CTA everyone settles for, and it costs them.
The number: HubSpot found a tailored CTA converts 202% better than a generic one.
What is UX?
User Experience: how your site feels to use. Good UX is invisible; bad UX makes people leave. Clarity, speed, and simplicity move it.
The number: People judge your site in 50 milliseconds — faster than a blink.
What kills trust on a website?
Five things: no contact info, broken links and typos, no security signals, stock photos with zero proof, and pop-ups before anyone has read a word. Distrust is instant — you don't get told, you just get left.
The number: 19% of shoppers have abandoned a checkout purely because they didn't trust the site with their card.
DIY website builder or done-for-you?
A homemade site looks the part of a risk: templated like ten thousand others, clunky on phones, and no one to call when it breaks. Built-for-you looks trusted before you say a word.
The number: 46% of people judge your credibility on how your site looks — before they read a single word.
The nuts & bolts.
What is the difference between a domain and hosting?
Your domain is the address; hosting is the land your site sits on. You own the domain — you only ever rent the hosting.
The number: Hosting typically costs about 10× more than the domain, every year.
Cheap hosting or managed hosting?
Cheap hosting is a parking spot; managed hosting is valet, security, and the lights left on. Cheap means shared and slower; managed means speed, backups, and someone watching it.
The number: A tenth of a second of extra speed lifted retail sales by more than 8%. Speed is a sales thing, not a nerd thing.
What is a CMS?
Content Management System: the dashboard you use to run your own site without touching code. Type, click publish, done — plugins add the rest.
The number: WordPress alone powers nearly six in ten sites built on a CMS.
What is SSL?
The padlock in the browser — it encrypts data between your visitor and your site, verifies your site is really you, and keeps the big red "Not Secure" warning away.
The number: 84% of people will abandon a purchase on a site that isn't secure.
What is alt text?
The written description behind every image — what a screen reader says out loud, what Google reads, and what shows when an image breaks. "Red ceramic mug" instead of silence.
The number: 96% of the top million home pages still failed basic accessibility checks (WebAIM). The bar is low — clearing it makes you stand out.
What is the difference between a logo and a brand?
The logo is the tip of the iceberg; the brand is everything under the water — colors, words, and how you make people feel. Consistency is what makes it stick.
The number: Presenting your brand consistently can lift revenue by around 33%. A logo alone can't do that.
Why is my website so slow?
It isn't broken — it's carrying too much weight. Three usual suspects: giant images, plugin pile-up, and cheap hosting.
The number: 32% more visitors leave when load time goes from one second to three.
